KEW is looking for an entertainment attorney with production experience to join our Los Angeles team, as a Director of Business and Legal Affairs. This is a 4-6 month contract, with the opportunity to become a full-time role.

The individual will report to and work closely with the Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs and will act as in-house counsel to KEW’s subsidiary production companies. The individual will have exposure to many aspects of the entertainment industry with an emphasis on non-scripted and documentary-style television. Further, the candidate will also assist with non-entertainment related issues, such as legal support for human resources, handling of employment matters, facilitating business transactions, and other legal matters that arise. An ideal candidate will bring a background of diverse experience – applicants with some production experience plus experience in a complimentary practice area (for example, litigation, labor and employment, guild, risk management, agency, music, or other unique experience) are preferred.

DUTIES

  • Provide support for the Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs.
  • Draft and negotiate above and below-the-line agreements for television and other audio-visual projects.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate development agreements, such as rights acquisition agreements (e.g., options, shopping agreements), co-production agreements, etc.
  • Draft and negotiate production contracts and releases, including talent and participant agreements, materials releases, guest appearance releases, and location releases.
  • Assist clients with clearance of their projects, including: (i) drafting and negotiating licensing agreements with respect to use of third party content, (ii) conducting fair use analyses and if necessary, preparing corresponding fair use letters for insurance, and (iii) conducting review of creative decks, footage, episodes, and films to advise on levels of risk related to copyright, trademark, defamation, invasion of privacy, violation of publicity rights, and other potential legal claims.
  • Assist clients with union/guild (e.g., SAG-AFTRA, DGA, WGA, IATSE, etc.) matters and related issues.
  • Negotiate and draft non-disclosure agreements, service agreements, employment, and other ordinary course-of-business contracts.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • Preferably, at least two to four years of experience at an entertainment law firm, network, studio, distribution company, or production company, specifically including production legal experience on television series, films and/or digital projects.
  • Strong academic credentials from an ABA-accredited law school and New York or California Bar admission.
  • Exposure to and an understanding of matters relating to intellectual property, particularly copyright law.

OFFICE COORDINATOR

We are seeking an OFFICE COORDINATOR to work out of our Los Angeles office. You will be the first point of contact for our company, and you will be instrumental to the daily operations of our small but busy Los Angeles office. This role requires an excellent multi-tasker capable of wearing many hats as you will work across multiple departments in multiple countries. This is an exciting growth opportunity for the right candidate.

DUTIES

  • Welcoming clients and guests
  • Answering phones
  • Maintaining office organisation
  • Purchasing supplies for the office, kitchen and break-room
  • Preparing invoices and coordinating payments with the London-based Accounts team
  • Directing IT queries, and assisting when able
  • Addressing building issues with property management
  • Coordinating domestic and international shipments
  • Organizing expense reports
  • Preparing enrollment paperwork for new employees
  • Supporting the LA-based members of Kew Media Group
  • Other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • BSc/BA in business administration or relevant field
  • 2+ years' office management experience or related experience
